The Grudge Match is On
May 11, 2010 By Simon Format:Paperback
This is it. The Straw Hats have taken the fight to CP9, and it is *on*. This ultra-long saga that first got in motion with One Piece, Vol. 34 is finally reaching the climax, and it's time to see if friendship and loyalty can stand up to the government's top assassin squad. Of course it has to - what kind of a story would One Piece be otherwise?
If you've been waiting for payback against CP9, it all starts right here.

The Tide Turns
April 29, 2010 By Simon Format:Paperback
The fight rages on in One Piece Vol. 43. Chopper is on a rampage, Zoro and Usopp are still handcuffed together, and Luffy is locked in mortal combat with Rob Lucci. The Buster Call is on its way, and Nico Robin draws closer to the Gates of Justice. Time is running out.
Another great volume, with the final (and most brutal) fight yet to come.

Luffy vs. Lucci Ends Here!
May 8, 2010 By Simon Format:Paperback
This is the volume you've been waiting for. After much chasing and fighting the Straw Hats have finally freed Nico Robin from CP9. It's time to escape Enies Lobby and return to Water Seven, but first there's still the matter of Luffy vs. Rob Lucci.
As far as final boss showdowns go, this is one epic and brutal battle. If Crocodile vs. Luffy back in One Piece, Vol. 23 impressed you, then Oda's managed to set the bar just that much higher.

The Volume You Can't Miss!
May 10, 2010 By Simon Format:Paperback
The Straw Hat pirates have won the battle and returned with their allies to Water Seven, but the story hasn't finished yet. The loss of the Merry Go/Going Merry leaves the crew stranded. Matters with Usopp have yet to be resolved.
And now Vice-Admiral Garp has arrived on the island, and with him comes a whole new set of revelations for the One Piece reader.

It's Thriller, Thriller Night!
May 20, 2010 By Simon Format:Paperback
Are you ready for a Thriller night? One Piece finally crosses into the horror genre as Oda creates an entirely new world that's equal parts traditional gothic horror, Universal Monsters, The Island of Doctor Moreau and homage to a certain King of Pop. There's zombies, ghosts, foul creatures cobbled together by an inhuman science and other genre staples that we've come to expect. The atmosphere is completely convincing and for the opening chapters you'd think the Straw Hats had wandered into another series.

The Thrills Keep Coming
June 19, 2011 By Jason Talley Format:Paperback
Thriller Bark continues to present the Straw Hats with perhaps their toughest challenge yet and not everyone is up to it. Some are defeated and some just run in terror. And while the good guys start to form their counterattack the Gecko Moira and the Mysterious Three break out the big guns and no one's plans go exactly as expected.
The fact that there's so much information thrown at us is the only flaw that I can really find in this volume. But even then it's not enough of an issue that I'd take points off. Thrill Bark may be one of the shorter One Piece sagas but it's still one of my favorites. Don't miss out and DO pick up this volume.

Nightmare Luffy
November 6, 2011 By Jason Talley Format:Paperback
The Straw Hats' battle with Gecko Moria kicks into high gear as the goodguys go on the offense against Moria and his giant minion; Oars. It's brawling action in classic OP form and the Straw Hats' determination as they take the fight to Oars is palpable.
But Moria isn't going down easy and more than once this volume he shows that he's not just tough but also very smart. Things climax with the stakes being raised again and the promise of a heck of fight for volume 50.

Triumph and Tragedy
August 2, 2011 By Jason Talley Format:Paperback
Thriller Bark wraps up here but the Straw Hats get no rest as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea makes the scene. With Luffy out cold the rest of the crew has to step up. It's a great scene and shows that conviction is a greater power than anything you could ever do with your fists. It also gives Zolo what truly is one of his greatest moments in the whole series.
Then it's time for Brook's origin and in true OP fashion it's an engaging tale, but ultimately a tragic one. One of the strong points of OP is the feeling you get when reading of being a part of the crew and sharing the fun, sadness and laughs along with the characters. Brook's story is fairly short but it has that facet in spades.

New Challengers
August 9, 2011 By Jason Talley Format:Paperback
This volume introduces us to the Supernovas; rookie pirates who are making waves and have bounties and powers to match what the Straw Hats bring to the table.
All in all this is a really good volume of the series.
It does come with some weak moments which do weigh things down a bit. But even a slightly flawed volume of One Piece is still very good reading so I very much recommend this volume.

Supernova Explosion
June 7, 2010 By Jason Talley Format:Paperback
This is a very action-packed volume as the Eleven Supernovas take center stage and show why they're the rising stars of the the pirate world. The are beatdowns aplenty and each of the Supernovas has their moment. While the OP world is one already dripping in interesting characters it's hard to walk away from this issue without feeling that some very important new players have arrived on the scene.
Action aside we do get a few quite moments and Luffy gets one where his refusal to take any shortcuts to becoming the Pirate King really makes his character shine.

A Standout Chapter
May 31, 2010 By Jason Talley Format:Paperback
This volume introduces fan favorite character Boa Hancock into the mix. It's also one where Luffy is flying solo for most of the story which is a position we haven't seen him in for some time.
Boa Hancock is also much worth mentioning. In addition to being an important new player in events she also comes with a strong background that's surprisingly dark by One Piece's normal standards. But this is all offset by her hidden side which makes her one of the more interesting characters to join the cast in recent volumes.

As a maker of graphic fiction, One Piece is my biggest Eastern inspiration. This volume continues the fast-paced and constantly hectic chaos of Monkey D. Luffy's epic journey to find the greatest treasure in the world, tossing our hero into the planet's largest prison, Impel Down, to rescue his brother, Ace. Many old nemeses return to help Luffy along the way, and all the new characters have energy and personality, too. Much like every other volume, #54 is a great read!

A Ray of Hope
The madness at Impel Down kicks into high gear as in the volume it's Luffy Vs Magellan and Luffy is way, way out of his league. It's a fierce battle that foreshadows the odds to come and forces the spotlight on one of the side characters.
Without getting too deeply into spoilers, as things roll around new and important players take the stage, old enemies return to make strange bedfellows and the influence of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" turns up in a big way. Yes, a lot of what we see is set up. But it's set up done well.

A counterpoint to the rather crushing reviews some others gave to this volume. One Piece is about adventure first and foremost, and a lot of people seem to have the notion that if there isn't any fighting going on, then it somehow becomes "boring".
You can't have a payoff without the buildup, and you can't have a conflict without introducing and familiarizing the reader with the players and how they relate to one another.
