One Piece Anime Review - Episode 01

This is my first attempt at reviewing an anime series. I'm starting with One Piece because I found it to be very enjoyable - It's funny, very unique characters, good drama and a lot of memorable scenes.


So, here we go...

Episode 01:


First of all, loved the catchy theme song -  We Are - Hiroshi Kitadani

The anime start at sea, which is appropriate since it is an anime about pirates.
Monkey D Luffy (yes monkey is a strange name for a boy ), the main character of the series,
wanted to become a Pirate King. Tall claim by a teenage boy with no pirating experience or
a crew member.


A passenger ship's crew found a floating barrel at sea. Taking it aboard thinking its a wine barrel, they found Luffy inside it instead. Asleep in the barrel. 


I mean, seriously, who can sleep in a floating barrel?


As Luffy awaken from his slumber, the ship is attacked by a group of pirates led by Alvida.


One of the unwilling pirate crew is Coby, a timid man kidnapped and forced to be a pirate.
All he want is to join the marines. After he found Luffy, he was inspired by Luffy bravery 
and simple determination in life. 


Luffy end up in his first battle with an actual pirate leader, Alvida.


Coby end up finding his courage to stand up for what he believe in.


So basically :


1. Luffy is a teenage boy determine to be a Pirate King


2. As a boy, he accidentally eat a "Demon Fruit"  - Gomu Gomu No Mi -  which give him the  
    ability to stretch his body like rubber, resulting in various cool fighting abilities and moves


3. Eating the Demon Fruit also gives him a disadvantage - He can't swim. Ever.
    Which make becoming a pirate at sea way more difficult than a normal non demon
    fruit eating person.




Pros & Cons:


Pros  -  It combines unique individual characters with their own personal history, 
              aspiration and skills.
         -  Surprisingly funny with a lot of memorable scenes.


Cons - Supporting characters is repetitively boring. I get tired of watching scenes of 
            gawking / surprised / disbelieved look from the supporting characters, 
            be it the pirates / marines / or regular town people


Bottom line: It's good. Go watch it.


If you need more reason to watch it, consider this  - One Piece anime has the highest selling manga volume in Japan with 13,833,116 copies sold..
